Case No. 20261009 · 09.10.2026

Ether slid and its big longs gave up at multi-million lossesthe whales kept the short, and the largest short house added to it: the capitulation came from the long side, not the short.

Case No. 20261009 · 09.10.2026 05:05 UTC · BTC $82,260 / ETH $2,488 · analysis: Fable 5.1 by Anthropic

📅YESTERDAY

Thursday's expiry settled at 08:00 UTC: BTC $83,042, ETH $2,571. The max pain fixed a day before expiry was $85,500 and $2,680: bitcoin settled 2.9% below it, ether 4.1% below — no match in either. The market-maker break-even corridor fixed a day before expiry held in bitcoin — the settlement landed right at its lower edge — but not in ether: price settled 0.36% under it. Today's Friday expiry settles after this snapshot.
The case registry took in three new cases; the closed tally stands at 876, 871 of them with a score.

⚡THE GIST

• Since yesterday's morning snapshot bitcoin is down 0.6%, to $82,260, and ether 3.1%, to $2,488. The sharp fall began yesterday at about 16:00 UTC, with the lows at 17:26: bitcoin on the perps reached about $80,350, ether about $2,407. OKX swaps liquidated $4.0M over the day, 98% of it longs.
• Ether: the big longs gave up. One of the two largest long positions was partially closed by the exchange itself; the other was almost entirely closed by its owner, at a loss of several million dollars. The shorts, meanwhile, took part of their profit — and the largest short house did the opposite and added.
• The short seller from our investigation, back since 6 October, closed its entire bitcoin short in parts over the day, on the fall — at a profit.
• Whale positioning: in ether the short tilt grew by about $20M over the day, and the measurement half an hour earlier gives the same; in bitcoin, counting all addresses of both snapshots, by only $4–15M depending on the window.
• The funds: another $72.5M left the ETH funds on Thursday — an eighth straight outflow; $244.1M left the BTC funds, and that is before IBIT, which is missing from the morning data.
• Verdict — continuation ⟳: the whales hold the short and the largest short house adds to it; it was the longs that capitulated, not the shorts.
• 📊 Our Polygon — Pendulum: the best of four versions, −$519 on the day, +$9,025 in total since 11.05.
• 📊 Our Polygon — signals: best — Dust Strategy V2 +$81,719 at a 4% win rate · worst — Wheel Trail V8 −$10,812. Table at the bottom.

🐋WHALES: WHAT CHANGED — three arenas

Arena one — Hyperliquid futures. We measure the day's change in coins between the 04:16 UTC snapshots — on the constant set and on all addresses of both snapshots, because addresses that closed out completely drop out of the constant set (how we track whale positions).
In ETH on the constant set — 135 addresses — the longs shrank by 32,835 ETH and the shorts by 24,618 ETH: both sides were shedding positions, and at the morning snapshot's price the short tilt grew by about $20M. Across all addresses — by about $24M; between the 03:46 snapshots — by about $22M.
In BTC the constant set shows $68M toward short, but two shorts that closed out in full — about 500 BTC together — dropped out of it. Across all addresses the short tilt grew by only about $15M, and between the 03:46 snapshots by $4M: a small shift.
Across the registry — among positions with a liquidation price — the totals at the 05:05 UTC snapshot: BTC long $145.7M against a short of $615.0M, ETH $351.8M against $751.5M. The whales' long share in BTC is 19.2% against 22.5% yesterday: the short is now 4.2 times the long.
Overleveraged whales number 68 against 74 yesterday, $811M of positions together against $1.06B, 64% of them longs against 69%. By our fragility index, none sits near a margin call — yesterday there were two.

Arena two — Deribit options. Today brings the heavy Friday expiry — it settles at 08:00 UTC, after this snapshot.
Among the fresh large structures protection against a fall dominates: in both coins puts below the market are bought and paid for with a sold ceiling; in ether, puts on a moderate decline are sold as well.
Quiet accumulation outside the blocks over the week (what a block is) is almost all puts: in bitcoin below the market, in ether on three consecutive strikes near the market and below it. The ratio of puts to calls in both coins is higher than a month ago.
Ether already sits 2% below the level under which dealers, by our model across the whole book, stop dampening a move and start amplifying it.

Arena three — money at the exchange border. The snapshot is fresh — up to this morning.
Over seven days $77.9M was brought into the exchange and $90.0M taken out: $12.1M more left than arrived, against $15.1M yesterday. USDC cash is leaving: $43.4M out against $29.8M in. Bitcoin, by contrast, is arriving: $24.6M in against $21.7M out; ether $15.7M in, $11.0M out.

This is positioning, not a direction forecast.

🧭CROSS-CHECK — five camps of witnesses

What the funds are doing. Spot ETFs are the only camp that measures purchases of the coin itself, not a leveraged position.
The ETH funds on Thursday −$72.5M, almost all of it BlackRock's ETHA at −$71.1M — an eighth straight outflow. The BTC funds on Thursday −$244.1M, of it Fidelity's FBTC −$197.1M; BlackRock's IBIT isn't in the morning data yet, so the figure is incomplete.
Over the five sessions of 02.10–08.10: BTC −$512.4M against +$185.7M the five before; ETH −$523.3M against −$13.7M.
This confirms the whales: the funds are selling both coins, ether for eight sessions running.

What the options market says. This camp measures one thing: what insurance costs on the Deribit book.
BTC skew +1.2 against +2.3 yesterday — puts are still dearer than calls, but by less (what skew is). In ETH +3.1 against +1.4: ether's insurance against a fall got dearer.
BTC two-day vol sits in the 18th percentile since February against the 51st yesterday; DVOL 36.3 against 38.9 (what implied vol is).
Our fear-and-greed index stands at 65 out of 100 against 77 yesterday — from extreme greed down to greed.
This confirms the whales in ether: protection against an ether fall costs more; in bitcoin, by contrast, insurance got cheaper.

What the futures say. This camp measures who pays whom to hold a position.
BTC funding on Hyperliquid is +0.010% in eight-hour terms — the venue's base rate, as yesterday; on Binance +0.007% against −0.001% (what funding is). In ETH +0.006% and +0.002% against +0.004% and −0.003% yesterday.
This camp is silent: funding sits at the base.

What the crowd is doing. This camp measures how retail accounts stand against the whales.
On Bybit perps 64% of BTC accounts stand long against 62% yesterday, and in ETH 72% against 71%.
This contradicts the whales: for a third day running the crowd is adding longs on the fall.

Any signs of stress. This camp measures whether anyone has already been forced out of the market.
On OKX swaps $4.0M was liquidated over the day, 98% of it longs, against $1.1M yesterday; that is almost half of all the week's liquidations there. Among the wallets of the Hyperliquid registry — at least one large partial forced close of an ether long.
This sides with the whales: it was longs that were forced out — the side opposite the whales.

Again: this is positioning, not a direction forecast.

🌡ALTSEASON — the classic and our barometer

The classic altseason index is 45.4 out of 100 on a list of 284 alts against 48.9 on a list of 278 yesterday; on today's list yesterday's value is 47.7. This is the transition zone: altseason starts at 75, bitcoin season sits below 25.
Our barometer watches money, not prices: open interest, funding and retail come from Bybit perps, the whales from the Hyperliquid registry. Alts' share of open interest is 43.3% — $5.22B of $12.04B, against 43.9% yesterday.
Alt contracts with funding hotter than bitcoin's make up 33% of open interest against 62% yesterday.
Retail in the top-10 coins stands 74.3% long against 72.0% yesterday.
Whales in alts are structurally short: 28.7% long across $1.39B of positions, the largest of them HYPE. That gap itself is permanent, the signal is in its CHANGE — over the day the whales' long share slipped by about a point.

⚖️VERDICT OF THE DAY

continuation ⟳ — the whales hold the short: in ether the short tilt grew by about $20M over the day, the largest short house added in both coins, and it was the big longs that capitulated. The witnesses: the funds, the stress markers and — in ether — the options side with the whales; the crowd stands against; the futures are silent.
What this does NOT mean. It isn't a forecast of a further fall: part of the short side took profit on yesterday's drop — the short seller from our investigation among them — and after the capitulation few long liquidation lines remain under ether. Today's Friday expiry, with ether at the very lower edge of the market-maker corridor, is a separate test.

🔒In today's full RADAR:

• which of the big ether longs gave up, how much they lost and whom the exchange closed;
• how much the short seller from our investigation made and at what price it got out.

🔒WHALES IN DETAIL 💠

Portraits from the Hyperliquid registry, snapshot 05:05 UTC; the day's change is measured between the 04:16 snapshots, in coins; individual addresses' moves come from the registry snapshots (every 30 min) and the trade records. Nicknames aren't treated as identification.

The 40× short seller got out at a profit. The 400 BTC short from $83,172, opened on 6–7 October, was closed in parts from 12:50 UTC yesterday to 02:07 today at $81,000–82,092 — +$498k by the trade records, with no forced-close flag. The address holds no perp positions now.
Whom the exchange closed. The 10× ether long, $105M yesterday, lost 8,246 ETH by force on 8 October at 16:02 UTC, at $2,416–2,423 — −$2.28M. Forty minutes later the address bought back 6,981 ETH: by the morning — ETH LONG $99.5M from $2,647, leverage 13×, uPnL −$6.3M, liquidation at $2,286 (−8%).
Who gave up on their own. The 25× long that stood 2% from its line yesterday closed 37,919 ETH from 04:28 to 20:21 UTC at $2,408–2,576 — −$5.33M, with no forced-close flag — and 341 BTC on top (−$212k). In parallel, from 05:17, it was building again: by the morning 11,000 ETH, liquidation at $2,442 (−1.8%). This one position is 99% of the ether long liquidation lines within 5% under the market. One more address closed an 8,500 ETH long and left ether.
Who took profit on the short. The 30× bitcoin short cut its ether from 27,260 to 23,041 ETH, at a profit by the trades available; another address closed a 2,877 ETH short (+$643k) and left; two more cut their shorts from 21,086 to 11,147 ETH and from 20,612 to 13,261 ETH. The address that flipped into an ether short yesterday closed it at 15:51 (+$345k) together with a 100 BTC short (+$297k), flipped long for four minutes (−$94k) and left the market.
Who added to the short. Both of the largest short addresses added over the day: the first — 24 BTC and 4,170 ETH, the second — 105 BTC and 4,152 ETH.
The market's biggest loss. ETH SHORT $278.3M, leverage 5×, entry $2,323, uPnL −$18.6M, liquidation at $3,887 (+56%).
The same address in BTC. SHORT $234.9M, entry $76,152, uPnL −$17.6M, liquidation at $137,544 (+67%).
The second address of the same handwriting. BTC SHORT $210.3M from $77,751 (uPnL −$11.6M, liquidation at $136,708, +66%), ETH SHORT $225.7M from $2,375 (uPnL −$10.3M, liquidation at $4,009, +61%). Together the two addresses carry $58.1M of unrealised loss against $72.2M yesterday; their $445.2M is 72% of the bitcoin short side across the registry against 67% yesterday.
The market's biggest gain — ETH LONG $49.8M at 4× from $1,936, uPnL +$11.1M.

🔬Who exactly

Both of the biggest shorts are Abraxas Capital Mgmt (Heka Funds): over the day the house added 129 BTC and 8,322 ETH of short; the unrealised loss across BTC and ETH is $58.1M.
The 30× bitcoin short and 25× ether short is an address labelled Fasanara Capital: BTC SHORT $24.2M, ETH SHORT $57.3M after the partial profit-taking.
Machi Big Brother is the 25× ether long that closed 37,919 ETH at a −$5.33M loss and holds 11,000 ETH again with its line at $2,442.
The 40× short seller — the subject of our investigation — carries no public label; nor do the other addresses in this section.
Money by address. Over seven days all $24.6M of incoming bitcoin arrived from Binance addresses; $20.8M of bitcoin and $11.0M of ether went to addresses labelled Wintermute; of the $15.7M of incoming ether, $12.3M came from Binance; $8.8M of USDC went to OKX deposit addresses.

🔒THE WEEK'S DYNAMICS 🔬

Perps on a constant set of addresses. Over 7 days on 129 addresses: BTC — $92M into the short, ETH — $34M into the long; yesterday on 131 addresses — $39M into the short and $11M into the long. The caveat is the same: full exits drop out of the set.
Gamma flip. BTC across the whole book $80,626 against $78,832 yesterday, spot 2.0% above it (what the flip is). ETH — $2,541 against $2,577 yesterday, spot 2.1% below it.
The price of fear. On the weekly window the premium is +1.2 (IV 36.2 against the actual weekly HV 35.0) against +3.5 yesterday.

Today's Friday expiry — 21,893 contracts: the market-maker break-even corridor is $81,000–$86,000, spot in its lower part (what the corridor is); max pain $84,000 on Deribit, $82,750 on Bybit, $83,500 across the combined book (what max pain is); put $75,000 (1,562 contracts), call $90,000 (1,833) (what the walls are). It settles at 08:00 UTC, after this snapshot.
Further down the calendar. Saturday 10.10 — 1,833 contracts; Friday 16.10 — 12,829, max pain $83,000; 30.10 — max pain $78,000 and a call wall at $95,000 on 25,032 contracts.
ETH levels. Today's expiry — 136,988 contracts: corridor $2,480–$2,740, spot at its very lower edge; max pain $2,600 on Deribit, $2,550 on Bybit, $2,570 across the combined book; put $2,500 (7,240) — spot is already under it, call $2,850 (11,357). For 16.10 in ether a put wall at $2,500 — 35,020 contracts.
Fuel. At the 04:16 UTC snapshot, under BTC within 5% of the market ($78,363–82,487) there are $34.2M of long positions against $66.7M yesterday; above the market within 5% — $25.6M of shorts against $52.9M: the short seller from our investigation has left the zone. In ETH — $27.6M of longs below the market against $105.5M, and above it $4.4M of shorts against none. This is about the RANGE of a move for the same push, not about a higher probability of that move (what the fuel map is).
OI flow. BTC put/call across all expiries: month 0.54 · week 0.57 · now 0.57. ETH 0.54 · 0.63 · 0.59 (what put/call is).
Two options books. On the same expiries up to 30 days BTC put/call is 0.60 on Deribit against 1.44 on Bybit; ETH 1.03 against 0.84.

💎SCENARIOS IN DETAIL 💠

The code's verdicts. The squeeze up through the short fuel from 07.10 and from 08.10 was cancelled at its line — a low of $80,555 on the spot series the code scores with. The slide triggers from 07.10 ($82,500) and 08.10 ($81,100) have been touched by that same low; the code scores them at their deadlines — today at 07:41 UTC and tomorrow at 05:42. The corridors from 07.10 and 08.10 also close at their deadlines.
The all-time tally (N counts only those that reached a verdict): squeeze up through the short fuel — 17 of 35, 15 more cancelled at their level; corridor — 19 of 39 plus 10 partial, 5 more cancelled; slide into the long fuel — 11 of 22, 15 more cancelled. The directional types are still no better than a coin toss.
The corridor holds — 50%. ⏱ 2 days, to 11.10. BTC stays within the near 2% of the market: $80,600–$83,900. Cancellation level: a touch of $78,150 — the lower edge of the five-percent zone.
Slide into the long fuel — 25%. ⏱ 2 days, to 11.10. Trigger: a touch of $80,600 — a break below the near 2%, into the zone where $34.2M of long liquidation lines sit under the market. Cancellation level: a touch of $83,900.
Squeeze up through the short fuel — 25%. ⏱ 2 days, to 11.10. Trigger: a touch of $83,900 — a break above the near 2%, where $25.6M of short liquidation lines sit above the market. Cancellation level: a touch of $80,600.
This is how we weigh the odds — not a promise; the code will compute the verdict from spot history.

📅PUBLIC LEDGER

(computed by code at the settlement price)
The market-maker corridor. Across 430 expiries since February the market-maker break-even corridor fixed a day before expiry held the settlement price 350 times — 81%. On Thursday it held in bitcoin, not in ether. Decision: we lean on the corridor knowing that roughly one expiry in five it doesn't hold.
Max pain. An exact match with the settlement in 157 of those same 430 expiries, 37%; a second day running with none, in bitcoin a fourth. Decision: we don't chase max pain.
The walls. The call wall held the settlement in 76 of 154 expiries where price reached it — 49%; the put wall in 44 of 108, 41%. On Thursday price broke through both put walls. Decision: we don't publish a wall without an expiry and a contract count, nor its percentage without a base.
Whale structures. The registry: 876 closed cases (5 of them from Bybit); across the 871 with a score, −$19.09M in total for the whales. Decision: win rate isn't money, and we don't copy whale structures — we track where they stand.
Polygon. Pendulum +$9,025 since 11.05 with −$519 on the day — both numbers from one series, the live curve of the best of four versions. Decision: we publish the tally daily with the same denominator and with the version's name, on losing days too.

📏Scale calibrator

• What protection costs. Our fear-and-greed index — 65 out of 100 against 77 yesterday. We compute it from the price of volatility and the option skew on Deribit, not from news, which is why it diverges from the well-known index.
• Cheap or expensive for this market itself. BTC two-day vol — 18th percentile of the hourly history since February, seven-day — 16th, 21 days out — 5th: bitcoin's insurance is cheaper than usual again.
• Which way protection tilts. BTC skew +1.2: puts are slightly dearer than calls — yesterday +2.3. Terms: indiciadesk.com/en/glossary/
