Case No. 20261031 · 31.10.2026
The market's biggest short house cut its shorts in both coins by roughly a fifth over the day and closed the day's trades in profit; the whale we've tracked since Monday closed its short itself, in profit, before price ever reached its line, and flipped longand since yesterday's morning forced close the exchange hasn't touched it again.
Case No. 20261031 · 31.10.2026 05:53 UTC · BTC $77,117 / ETH $2,238 · analysis: Fable 5.1 by Anthropic
📅YESTERDAY
The monthly expiry 30.10 settled at 08:00 UTC: bitcoin at $78,119, inside the market-maker corridor $72,000–82,500 fixed a day before expiry; max pain $78,000 matched — the settlement was 0.2% above it. Ether at $2,235, 1.1% under its corridor $2,260–2,650; max pain $2,450 missed, and price broke the $2,300 put wall of 25,215 contracts. All the expiry levels here are the ones fixed a day before it, which is why some of them differ from what we showed yesterday morning. The registry took in both — it now holds 474 expiries. The expiry closed 14 whale cases: 3 in profit, 11 at a loss, −$0.54M together.
Of the positions yesterday's radar said to watch: the whale in its short closed it on its own, in profit — price never reached its line; the new short with its line above the market closed itself yesterday at 05:35 UTC, at a loss, and the account flipped long near the top; the big long with its line under the market got out in full on its own, before its line, at a loss.
⚡THE GIST
• Since yesterday's morning snapshot bitcoin is down 1.7%, ether 0.4%. Between the morning snapshots (05:46 UTC) bitcoin travelled a 3.3% range — yesterday 7.2%: the high on the Hyperliquid perp was $78,772 at 06:30 UTC on 30.10, the low $76,264 at 18:52.
• The biggest short house cut its bitcoin short by 969 BTC and its ether short by 32,766 ETH — both by roughly 19% — and closed the day's trades in profit. That is the main reason the whales on the constant set of addresses shifted toward long — by about $61.5M in bitcoin and about $63.9M in ether.
• The whale we've tracked since Monday closed its short in parts during the day, on its own and in profit, opened a long in the evening and sold part of it overnight, in profit. Since yesterday's close at 05:32 UTC the exchange hasn't closed it again.
• The whales' short tilt by the registry — 4.3 times the long against 4.1: the short shrank by about $97M, but the long shrank too, by about $32M, because a big long got out in full.
• There is no near fuel within 1% of the price on either side. Within 2% under the price — $35.8M of long lines, two high-leverage positions; above it — only $3.4M of short lines.
• Verdict — continuation ⟳. Bitcoin funds bought over the week, ether funds sold twice as much as the week before; the crowd on Bybit added longs again; our fear-and-greed index is 45 against 55.
• 📊 Our Polygon — Pendulum: the best of four versions, −$1,971 on the day, +$4,630 in total since 11.05.
• 📊 Our Polygon — signals: best — Dust Strategy V2 +$74,969 at a 4% win rate · worst — Wheel Trail V8 −$10,525. Table at the bottom.

⚖️VERDICT OF THE DAY
continuation ⟳ — the whales stand short in bitcoin: the registry's short is 4.3 times the long against 4.1 yesterday, while price is down 1.7% from yesterday's snapshot. The witnesses: options side with the whales; the funds — against them in bitcoin and with them in ether; the crowd stands against; the futures and stress are silent.
What this does NOT mean. The shift toward long on the constant set isn't mass buying: it is the biggest short house taking its profit and cutting its shorts, plus one whale that flipped. The registry's tilt still grew, because longs were leaving too. The long fuel within 2% under the price is two high-leverage positions: that is about how far a move down can carry for the same push, not about it being more likely.
🔒In today's full RADAR:
• how much the biggest short house made on the cut and how much short it has left;
• where the line of the whale that flipped long lies, and who else stands as long fuel under the price.

📅PUBLIC LEDGER
(computed by code at the settlement price)
The market-maker corridor. Across 474 expiries since February the market-maker break-even corridor fixed a day before expiry held the settlement price 388 times — 82%; yesterday's monthly expiry settled inside the corridor in bitcoin and under it in ether. Decision: we lean on the corridor knowing that roughly one expiry in five it doesn't hold.
Max pain. A match with the settlement in 176 of those same 474 expiries, 37%; yesterday it matched in bitcoin, not in ether. Decision: we don't chase max pain.
The walls. The call wall held the settlement in 79 of 159 expiries where price reached it — 50%; the put wall in 49 of 118, 42%: yesterday's ether put wall was broken by price. Decision: we don't publish a wall without an expiry and a contract count, nor its percentage without a base.
Whale structures. The registry: 945 closed cases (5 of them from Bybit); across the 936 with a score, −$16.52M in total for the whales against −$15.98M yesterday: the monthly expiry closed 14 cases, 3 in profit and 11 at a loss, −$0.54M together. Decision: win rate isn't money, and we don't copy whale structures — we track where they stand.
Polygon. Pendulum +$4,630 since 11.05 with −$1,971 on the day — both numbers from one series, the live curve of the best of four versions. Decision: we publish the tally daily with the same denominator and with the version's name, on a losing day too.
📏Scale calibrator
• What protection costs. Our fear-and-greed index — 45 out of 100 against 55 yesterday. We compute it from the price of volatility and the option skew on Deribit, not from news, which is why it diverges from the well-known index.
• Cheap or expensive for this market itself. BTC two-day vol — 35th percentile of the hourly history since February, six-day — 68th, 27 days out — 54th: the nearest insurance sits in the middle of its usual range and cheaper than yesterday, the farther one — usual.
• Which way protection tilts. BTC skew +5.4: puts dearer than calls, and the tilt toward puts grew over the day from +3.2. Terms: indiciadesk.com/en/glossary/
