The short seller from our investigation is back above the marketand while the bitcoin whales' tilt barely moved, four large longs gave up inside it.

📅YESTERDAY
Wednesday's expiry settled at 08:00 UTC: BTC$84,207, ETH$2,619. The max pain fixed a day before expiry was $86,000 and $2,720: bitcoin settled 2.1% below it, ether 3.7% below — no match in either. This time the market-maker break-even corridor fixed a day before expiry ($84,500–$87,500 and $2,640–$2,760) didn't hold either: price settled under it in both assets — by 0.35% in bitcoin and 0.8% in ether. Today's expiry settles after this snapshot.
The case registry took in two new cases; the closed tally stands at 872, 867 of them with a score.
⚡THE GIST
• Since yesterday's morning snapshot bitcoin is down 1.7%, to $82,754, and ether 1.9%, to $2,568. OKX swaps liquidated $1.1M over the day, 97% of it longs.
• The short seller from our investigation, who left the market on 3 October, is back: on 6 October the address opened a bitcoin short again and added to it yesterday. Its liquidation line sits only a few percent above price, and it accounts for almost two thirds of the short liquidation lines in the five-percent zone above the market.
• Ether: on the same set of addresses the whales widened their short tilt by about $59M over the day, and the measurement half an hour earlier gives about $50M. The largest short house added ether to its short, and one long address was partially closed by the exchange itself.
• Bitcoin: the whales' overall tilt barely changed, but inside it there was capitulation. Four large longs left at a loss, all of them opened only days ago; other whales added longs on the fall.
• The funds: on Wednesday $487M left the BTC ETFs and $161M the ETH funds — a seventh straight outflow.
• Verdict — continuation ⟳: the whales hold the short and are adding to it in ether; this time the funds and the price of insurance stand on their side.
• 📊 Our Polygon — Pendulum: the best of four versions, −$917 on the day, +$9,544 in total since 11.05.
• 📊 Our Polygon — signals: best — Dust Strategy V2 +$81,719 at a 4% win rate · worst — Wheel Trail V8 −$10,812. Table at the bottom.
🐋WHALES: WHAT CHANGED — three arenas
Arena one — Hyperliquid futures. We measure the day's change in coins between the 04:46 UTC snapshots (how we track whale positions). In ETH on the constant set — the 144 addresses present in both snapshots — the longs shrank by 9,888 ETH and the shorts added 13,287 ETH: at the morning snapshot's price the short tilt grew by about $59M. Between the 04:16 snapshots — by about $50M. In BTC the constant set misleads today: addresses that closed out completely drop out of it. On that set the picture shows $59M toward long, but the three large longs that left in full are another 940BTC of longs shed. Counting all addresses of both snapshots, the tilt grew by only about $12M toward short over the day, and by about $17M since yesterday's 07:16 snapshot: a small shift. Across the registry — among positions with a liquidation price — the totals at the 05:21 UTC snapshot: BTC long $188.6M against a short of $648.1M, ETH$435.2M against $834.3M. The whales' long share in BTC is 22.5% against 25.5% yesterday: the short is now 3.4 times the long. Overleveraged whales number 74 against 72 yesterday, $1.06B of positions together against $1.12B, 69% of them longs against 72%. Two of them, by our fragility index, sit near a margin call.
Arena two — Deribit options. Over two days 58 structures were recognised in bitcoin against 55 yesterday, and 24 in ether against 21. The next heavy expiry is tomorrow, Friday 09.10. Among the bitcoin ones — a few more pinpoint positions far above the market for the end of October and a bearish structure in which protection against a fall is paid for with a sold ceiling; in ether — the same bearish structure, puts sold on a moderate decline and a position on a moderate rise. Quiet accumulation outside the blocks (what a block is): in bitcoin — puts below the market and calls far above it; in ether — calls above the market for tomorrow's expiry and puts slightly above the market. Ether already sits slightly below the level under which dealers, by our model across the whole book, stop dampening a move and start amplifying it.
Arena three — money at the exchange border. The snapshot is fresh — up to this morning. Over seven days $72.0M was brought into the exchange and $87.0M taken out: $15.1M more left than arrived, against $4.9M of net inflow yesterday. USDC cash is leaving again: $37.3M out against $30.2M in. Bitcoin: $32.8M out against $22.0M in; ether, by contrast, is arriving — $9.1M in against $1.3M out.
This is positioning, not a direction forecast.
🧭CROSS-CHECK — five camps of witnesses
What the funds are doing. Spot ETFs are the only camp that measures purchases of the coin itself, not a leveraged position. On Wednesday $487.1M left the BTC funds: BlackRock's IBIT −$207.7M, Fidelity's FBTC −$105.1M, ARKB −$101.7M. The ETH funds −$160.8M, of it BlackRock's ETHA −$116.1M — a seventh straight outflow. Over the five sessions of 01.10–07.10: BTC−$165.6M against +$273.7M the five before; ETH−$506.2M against +$107.7M. This confirms the whales: the funds are selling both coins while the whales hold the short.
What the options market says. This camp measures one thing: what insurance costs on the Deribit book. BTCskew+2.3 against −0.7 yesterday: puts are now noticeably dearer than calls (what skew is). In ETH+1.4 against 0.0. BTC two-day vol sits in the 51st percentile since February against the 28th yesterday; DVOL38.9 against 36.0 (what implied vol is). Our fear-and-greed index stands at 77 out of 100, as yesterday. This confirms the whales: insurance against a fall got dearer.
What the futures say. This camp measures who pays whom to hold a position. BTC funding on Hyperliquid is +0.010% in eight-hour terms — the venue's base rate, as yesterday; on Binance −0.001% against −0.004% (what funding is). In ETH+0.004% and −0.003% against +0.010% and −0.003% yesterday. This camp is silent: in bitcoin funding sits at the base; in ether on Hyperliquid it slipped below the base — longs are paying less.
What the crowd is doing. This camp measures how retail accounts stand against the whales. On Bybit perps 62% of BTC accounts stand long against 59% yesterday, and in ETH71% against 70%. This contradicts the whales: for a second day running the crowd is adding longs on the fall.
Any signs of stress. This camp measures whether anyone has already been forced out of the market. On OKX swaps $1.1M was liquidated over the day, 97% of it longs, after $1.1M yesterday. Among the wallets of the Hyperliquid registry — at least one partial forced close of an ether long. This sides with the whales: it was longs that were forced out — the side opposite the whales.
Again: this is positioning, not a direction forecast.
🌡ALTSEASON — the classic and our barometer
The classic altseason index is 48.9 out of 100 on a list of 278 alts against 51.5 on a list of 233 yesterday; on today's list yesterday's value is 48.4. This is the transition zone: altseason starts at 75, bitcoin season sits below 25.
Our barometer watches money, not prices: open interest, funding and retail come from Bybit perps, the whales from the Hyperliquid registry. Alts' share of open interest is 43.9% — $5.38B of $12.26B, against 43.5% yesterday.
Alt contracts with funding hotter than bitcoin's make up 62% of open interest against 48% yesterday.
Retail in the top-10 coins stands 72.0% long against 71.9% yesterday.
Whales in alts are structurally short: 29.8% long across $1.60B of positions, the largest of them HYPE. That gap itself is permanent, the signal is in its CHANGE — over the day the whales' long share slipped by about a point.

⚖️VERDICT OF THE DAY
continuation ⟳ — the whales hold the short: in ether they widened the short tilt by about $59M over the day; in bitcoin the tilt barely changed, but the large new longs have left it. The witnesses: the funds, the options and the stress markers side with the whales; the crowd stands against; the futures are silent.
What this does NOT mean. It isn't a forecast of a further fall: above bitcoin there are now more short liquidation lines than yesterday, and almost two thirds of them belong to a single leveraged address. And yesterday's break of the market-maker corridor in both assets is one expiry, not a new norm: by the ledger the corridor holds roughly four expiries in five.

• with what leverage the short seller from our investigation came back, and exactly where its liquidation line sits;
• which of the large bitcoin longs gave up, and which ether whale stands closest to liquidation.

🔒WHALES IN DETAIL 💠
Portraits from the Hyperliquid registry, snapshot 05:21 UTC; the day's change is measured between the 04:46 snapshots, in coins; individual addresses' moves come from the registry snapshots (every 30 min) and the trade records. Nicknames aren't treated as identification.
The 40× short seller is back. After leaving on 3 October, the address reopened a short on 6 October at 15:38 — 100BTC at about $86,160. Yesterday it closed part of the short at a profit (305BTC, +$271k) and was building again (604.8BTC at $83,073–84,000). At 05:21 — BTC SHORT $33.0M, 400BTC, leverage 40×, entry $83,172, uPnL +$0.29M, liquidation at $86,044 (+4%). The account held about $1.9M at the 04:46 snapshot. This one position is 64% of the bitcoin short liquidation lines within 5% above the market at the 04:46 snapshot. Who gave up in bitcoin. Four large longs left bitcoin entirely yesterday, none of them with a forced-close flag; all four were opened between 2 and 5 October: 376BTC at 10× at 08:00 UTC (−$955k), 314BTC at 10× at 16:00 (−$866k), 250BTC at 20× at 11:13–14:19 (−$649k); one more address closed 218BTC at 17:44–18:03 (−$456k) together with a 5,767 ETH long (−$858k). Who took profit on the short. The address that held a 300BTC short against an ether long closed it at 10:07–16:48 at $83,000–83,500 (+$343k). The 30× short shrank from 596 to 315BTC — BTC SHORT $25.9M, uPnL +$0.76M. Who bought the fall. The 40× bitcoin long (the same one that was closing in the night of 7 October) — 300BTC against 115 at yesterday's 04:46 snapshot. Another 40× address — from 160 to 346BTC, liquidation at $65,489 (−21%), and it opened a 5,876 ETH long. Whom the exchange closed. The address with a 7,151 ETH long that stood less than 1% from its line yesterday lost 1,430 ETH of the long by force on 7 October at 10:07, at $2,572 (−$252k), together with a small 25.6BTC short. At 12:27–12:47 it closed the remaining 5,707 ETH on its own (−$1.02M) and flipped short — 3,076 ETH by the morning. Ether longs near the line. The 25× long — ETH LONG $96.1M from $2,648, uPnL −$3.4M, liquidation at $2,516 (−2%); the account holds $3.7M. This one position is over 90% of the ether long liquidation lines within 5% under the market. The 10× long — ETH LONG $105.4M from $2,694, uPnL −$5.7M: on 7 October at 07:54 $4.05M USDC arrived in the account, and the liquidation line moved down from $2,525 to $2,424 (−6%). The market's biggest loss.ETH SHORT $275.4M, leverage 5×, entry $2,316, uPnL −$26.0M, liquidation at $4,232 (+65%). The same address in BTC. SHORT $233.3M, entry $76,098, uPnL −$18.0M, liquidation at $146,722 (+78%); unchanged over the day. The second address of the same handwriting. Over the day it added 164BTC and 4,241 ETH of short: BTC SHORT $202.1M from $77,554 (uPnL −$12.0M, liquidation at $150,565, +83%), ETH SHORT $221.2M from $2,369 (uPnL −$16.2M, liquidation at $4,472, +75%). Together the two addresses carry $72.2M of unrealised loss against $92.9M yesterday; their $435.4M is 67% of the bitcoin short side across the registry against 62% yesterday. One more ether short is growing. A 15× address — from 15,753 to 20,330 ETH of short. The market's biggest gain — ETH LONG $77.4M at 20× from $2,134, uPnL +$12.8M.
Cases in the registry — two new; notable ones of the 162 open. 🔬Who exactly
Both of the biggest shorts are Abraxas Capital Mgmt (Heka Funds): over the day the house added 164BTC and about 4,400 ETH of short; the unrealised loss across BTC and ETH is $72.2M.
The 30× short that cut bitcoin is an address labelled Fasanara Capital: BTC SHORT $25.9M, ETH SHORT $69.7M.
Machi Big Brother is the 25× ether long with its line at $2,516 and the 40× bitcoin long that bought back up to 300BTC.
The 40× short seller — the subject of our investigation — carries no public label; nor do the other addresses in this section.
Money by address. Over seven days all $22.0M of incoming bitcoin arrived from Binance addresses; $31.9M of the $32.8M of outgoing bitcoin went to addresses labelled Wintermute, along with $10.1M of SOL; of the $9.1M of incoming ether, $6.3M came from Binance; $6.4M of USDC went to OKX deposit addresses.
🔒THE WEEK'S DYNAMICS 🔬
Perps on a constant set of addresses. Over 7 days on 131 addresses: BTC — $39M into the short, ETH — $11M into the long; yesterday on 136 addresses — $96M into the short and $49M into the long. The caveat is the same as in arena one: full exits drop out of the set.

The price of fear. On the weekly window the premium is +3.5 (IV37.6 against the actual weekly HV34.2) against +1.7 yesterday.
Changing of the guard. Over the week the whales assembled 179 confirmed structures against 175 yesterday: 44 bullish, 57 bearish, 22 on volatility, 56 on range.
🔒CROSS-CHECK IN DETAIL 💠
BTC levels. Everything below comes from the Deribit options book unless stated otherwise. Today's Thursday expiry — 4,563 contracts: the market-maker break-even corridor is $82,500–$86,500, spot near its lower edge (what the corridor is); max pain$84,500 on Deribit, $83,500 on Bybit, $84,000 across the combined book (what max pain is); put $84,000 (307 contracts) — spot is already under it, call $85,500 (499) (what the walls are). It settles at 08:00 UTC, after this snapshot.
Further down the calendar. Friday 09.10 — 22,307 contracts, max pain$84,000, a call wall at $90,000 (1,835) and a put wall at $75,000 (1,530); 30.10 — max pain$79,000 and a call wall at $95,000 on 25,260 contracts.
ETH levels. Today's expiry — 44,232 contracts: corridor $2,560–$2,660, spot near its lower edge; max pain$2,600 on both exchanges; put $2,560 (2,964), call $2,620 (4,432). Friday 09.10 in ether — 123,997 contracts, max pain$2,650.
Fuel. At the 04:16 UTC snapshot, under BTC within 5% of the market ($78,546–82,680) there are $66.7M of long positions against $25.2M at yesterday's 06:16 snapshot; above the market within 5% — $52.9M of shorts against $12.7M. In ETH — $105.5M of longs below the market against $237.0M, and above it no short liquidation lines, as yesterday. This is about the RANGE of a move for the same push, not about a higher probability of that move (what the fuel map is).
Gamma vacuum. In BTC there are no empty zones above the market; below, it is empty at $76,000–$77,000; in ETH — $2,400–$2,450 under the market.
Stress test ±2%. In BTC a 2% fall, to about $81,100, stays in the zone where dealers dampen the move; a 2% rise stays under the $90,000 call wall. In ETH price already sits at the $2,577 gamma flip: below it dealers amplify the move rather than dampen it.
OI flow.BTC put/call across all expiries: month 0.55 · week 0.55 · now 0.56. ETH0.55 · 0.55 · 0.57 (what put/call is).
Two options books. On the same expiries up to 30 days BTC put/call is 0.56 on Deribit against 1.28 on Bybit; ETH0.99 against 0.88 — in ether the Bybit book is less put-heavy than Deribit's for the first time since 2 October.

💎SCENARIOS IN DETAIL 💠
The code's verdicts. From 06.10: the slide into the long fuel was confirmed — a low of $82,723 on the spot series the code scores with, against the $83,650 level; the corridor — partial, price inside it 65% of the time; the squeeze was cancelled at that same line. The scenarios from 07.10 run to 09.10; the slide trigger of $82,500 hasn't been touched yet — the low is $82,723.
The all-time tally (N counts only those that reached a verdict): squeeze up through the short fuel — 17 of 35, 13 more cancelled at their level; corridor — 19 of 39 plus 10 partial, 5 more cancelled; slide into the long fuel — 11 of 22, 15 more cancelled. The directional types are still no better than a coin toss.
The corridor holds — 50%. ⏱ 2 days, to 10.10. BTC stays within the near 2% of the market: $81,100–$84,400. Cancellation level: a touch of $78,600 — the lower edge of the five-percent zone.
Slide into the long fuel — 25%. ⏱ 2 days, to 10.10. Trigger: a touch of $81,100 — a break below the near 2%, into the zone where $66.7M of long liquidation lines sit under the market. Cancellation level: a touch of $84,400.
Squeeze up through the short fuel — 25%. ⏱ 2 days, to 10.10. Trigger: a touch of $84,400 — a break above the near 2%, where $52.9M of short liquidation lines sit above the market. Cancellation level: a touch of $81,100.
This is how we weigh the odds — not a promise; the code will compute the verdict from spot history.

📅PUBLIC LEDGER
(computed by code at the settlement price)
The market-maker corridor. Across 428 expiries since February the market-maker break-even corridor held the settlement price 349 times — 82%. Wednesday's expiry — measured against the corridor fixed a day before — didn't hold in either asset. Decision: we lean on the corridor knowing that roughly one expiry in five it doesn't hold; yesterday was one of those.
Max pain. An exact match with the settlement in 157 of those same 428 expiries, 37%; on Wednesday none. Decision: we don't chase max pain.
The walls. The call wall held the settlement in 76 of 154 expiries where price reached it — 49%; the put wall in 44 of 106, 42%. On Wednesday the bitcoin put wall held, the ether one didn't. Decision: we don't publish a wall without an expiry and a contract count, nor its percentage without a base.
Whale structures. The registry: 872 closed cases (5 of them from Bybit); across the 867 with a score, −$19.11M in total for the whales. Decision: win rate isn't money, and we don't copy whale structures — we track where they stand.
Polygon. Pendulum +$9,544 since 11.05 with −$917 on the day — both numbers from one series, the live curve of the best of four versions. Decision: we publish the tally daily with the same denominator and with the version's name, on losing days too.
