The one top whale forced out on Friday's spike was a shorton the way back down the whales added $43M to their ether short tilt and barely touched bitcoin.

📅YESTERDAY
Friday's expiry settled at 08:00 UTC: BTC$85,875, ETH$2,728. The max pain fixed a day before expiry — $83,000 and $2,650 — diverged from the settlement for both assets, by 3.3% and 2.9%. In bitcoin price broke out of the market-maker break-even corridor upward by 0.4%; in ether the corridor held. Today's Saturday expiry settles after this snapshot.
The case registry took in no new cases; the closed tally stands at 871.
⚡THE GIST
• Bitcoin lost 2.2% over the day, to $84,632, although yesterday at 12:30 UTC it reached ~$87,250 on the Deribit perp.
• On that spike there was one partial forced closure among the top Hyperliquid whales — a high-leverage short; the owner closed the rest of the position himself and opened a smaller short.
• The whales barely changed their bitcoin tilt: on a constant set of addresses both the longs and the shorts shrank, and the short tilt added only ~$3M.
• Ether went the other way: whale shorts grew by ~16,000 ETH over the day, the short tilt +~$43M; several addresses flipped from long to short.
• Verdict — continuation ⟳: ether keeps going its own way into the whales' short, and faster this time.
• 📊 Our Polygon — Pendulum: the best of four versions, −$163 on the day, +$9,665 in total since 11.05.
• 📊 Our Polygon — signals: best — Dust Strategy V2 +$81,719 at a 4% win rate · worst — Wheel Trail V8 −$9,929. Table at the bottom.
🐋WHALES: WHAT CHANGED — three arenas
Arena one — Hyperliquid futures. We measure the day's change on a constant set of addresses (how we track whale positions) — the 147 present in both snapshots at 04:16 UTC — and count in coins, as yesterday. In BTC the longs on this set shrank by 283BTC and the shorts by 245BTC. At the morning snapshot price that's ≈$24M against ≈$21M: the short tilt grew by only about $3M. In ETH the longs barely moved (+97ETH), while the shorts grew by 16,103 ETH — the short tilt +≈$43M. Across the registry — among positions with a liquidation price, as yesterday — the totals at the 06:16 UTC snapshot: BTC long $181.3M against a short of $560.3M, ETH$466.4M against $901.5M. The whales' long share in BTC is 24.4% against 22.8% yesterday (then — the 03:16 snapshot). Overleveraged whales number 66 against 64 yesterday, $1.03B of positions together, 67% of them longs. Near a margin call — none.
Arena two — Deribit options.Bitcoin got positions on a moderate rise, but not on a spike; ether got a wide range and call spreads up. Over two days 89 structures were recognised in bitcoin against 40 yesterday; among the three most visible are a call ratio spread on a moderate rise, a call butterfly on a level far above the market and a small bearish call spread. In ether — 28: the biggest is a position on price staying inside a wide corridor, plus two bullish call spreads. Quiet accumulation outside the blocks (what a block is): in ether — puts under the market for mid-October and later, the biggest addition of the week; in bitcoin, puts below the market are being added.
Arena three — money at the exchange border. The snapshot is fresh — up to this morning. Over seven days $84.3M was brought into the exchange and $118.6M taken out: $34.3M more was withdrawn than deposited, against $0.5M yesterday. USDC cash was leaving through the bridge: $87.7M out against $52.3M in. This time more bitcoin left than came in: $10.5M against $8.9M, and what came in arrived from exchange addresses. Ether: $11.2M out against $9.8M in.
This is positioning, not a direction forecast.
🧭CROSS-CHECK — five camps of witnesses
What the funds are doing. Spot ETFs are the only camp that measures purchases of the coin itself, not a leveraged position. Friday's numbers aren't in yet: the last known day is Thursday 01.10, +$102.7M into the BTC funds and −$55.4M out of the ETH funds. Over the five sessions of 25.09–01.10: BTC+$185.7M against +$2.68B the week before, ETH−$13.7M against +$747M. This camp is silent: no new data.
What the options market says. This camp measures one thing: what insurance costs on Deribit. BTCskew−0.8 against +1.4 yesterday: calls are dearer than puts again (what skew is). In ETH−1.1 against −0.7. BTC two-day vol sits in the 2nd percentile since February against the 28th yesterday; DVOL34.8 against 36.4 (what implied vol is). In ether the nearest insurance is in the zeroth percentile: it has been cheaper in less than 0.5% of hours since February. The 2-day tenor for both assets runs across the weekend, to Monday 05.10. Our fear-and-greed index stands at 80 out of 100 against 76 yesterday. This contradicts the whales: protection against a fall got cheaper and calls are dearer than puts — the options market isn't paying for a fall, even though the whales hold a short.
What the futures say. This camp measures who pays whom to hold a position. BTC funding on Hyperliquid is +0.006% in eight-hour terms — slightly below the venue's base rate, against +0.010% yesterday; on Binance +0.001% against +0.007% (what funding is). In ETH+0.010% and 0.000% against +0.010% and +0.009% yesterday. This camp is silent: funding has cooled to the base and below — longs aren't overpaying on the drop.
What the crowd is doing. This camp measures how retail accounts stand against the whales. On Bybit perps 57% of BTC accounts stand long against 55% yesterday; in ETH69% against 67%. This camp is silent: the crowd bought a little into the drop; the gap with the whales barely moved.
Any signs of stress. This camp measures whether anyone has already been forced out of the market. Among the top Hyperliquid whales there was one partial forced closure over the day — a short on the spike up. On OKX swaps $1.9M was liquidated, 88% of it shorts, against $375k yesterday; that's 45% of all the week's liquidations. This contradicts the whales: it was shorts that got forced out — the side the whales stand on.
Again: this is positioning, not a direction forecast.
🌡ALTSEASON — the classic and our barometer
The classic altseason index stands at 42.2 out of 100 against 44.0 yesterday. The coin list changed — 251 alts against 250; on today's list yesterday's value is 41.0, so the index actually rose 1.2 points over the day. This is the transition zone: altseason starts at 75, bitcoin season sits below 25.
Our barometer watches money, not prices: open interest, funding and retail come from Bybit perps, the whales from the Hyperliquid registry. Alts' share of open interest is 44.0% — $5.47B of $12.42B, against 43.8% yesterday.
Alt contracts with funding hotter than bitcoin's make up 91% of open interest against 69% yesterday: the threshold — bitcoin funding on Bybit — turned negative, so almost every alt ended up "hotter" than it; alt funding itself is low.
Retail in the top-10 coins stands 71.9% long against 70.7% yesterday.
Whales in alts are structurally short: 28.8% long across $1.51B of positions, the biggest of them HYPE. That gap itself is permanent, the signal is in its CHANGE — over the day the whales' long share barely moved.

⚖️VERDICT OF THE DAY
continuation ⟳ — the split between bitcoin and ether that only showed yesterday is holding: in bitcoin the whales keep their tilt almost unchanged, while in ether they added ≈$43M of shorts over the day and several addresses flipped from long to short. Witnesses: options and stress go against the whales; the funds have no new data, futures and the crowd are silent.
What this does NOT mean. This is not a claim that ether will go down: insurance against a fall is cheap, and in ether calls are dearer than puts, even though puts under the market are being added. Nor does a short forced out on the spike up mean the whales are losing: the market's biggest shorts sit with a wide margin to their liquidation lines.

• the high-leverage short that was partly force-closed on the spike — the timeline, the loss and the new position;
• who bought bitcoin near the day's high, and where the liquidation lines of the two biggest ether longs sit.

🔒WHALES IN DETAIL 💠
Portraits from the Hyperliquid registry, snapshot 06:16 UTC at BTC$84,593 and ETH$2,676; the day's change is measured between the 04:16 snapshots, in coins; trades come from Hyperliquid's history. Nicknames aren't treated as identification.
The 40× short — partly forced. The same short that yesterday sat 0.7% from its $87,138 liquidation line: on 02.10 at 12:31 UTC, at a mark price of $87,164, the exchange force-closed 40 of its 200BTC (−$0.11M). At 13:37–13:58 UTC the owner closed the remaining 160BTC himself at ~$87,088 (−$0.41M) and opened a new short — 50BTC at $86,505. Together with the 30.09 exit this address lost ≈$1.36M without fees over 30.09–02.10; the account stands at $315k at 06:16 against $458k yesterday at 05:40 UTC. The new short is $95k in the green at the snapshot. Who bought near the high. A new address on 02.10 at 12:43–12:48 UTC, a quarter hour after the day's high (12:31), opened a 376BTC long at $86,558 at 10×. At 06:16 — BTC LONG $31.8M, uPnL −$0.74M, liquidation at $60,394 (−29%). A 40× long sold both on the rise and on the drop. Over the day it cut bitcoin from 498 to 300BTC: before 14:00 UTC it sold ~135BTC at a gain of ≈$0.26M (53BTC of that on the morning push we wrote about yesterday), and on the drop at 16–19 UTC another ~165BTC at a loss of ≈$0.09M, and in between and overnight it alternately bought and sold in smaller amounts. At the same time it added ether: from 32,700 to 37,075 ETH. At 06:16 — BTC LONG $24.5M and ETH LONG $99.3M at 25× with a liquidation line at $2,551 (−5%). Another 40× long bought 200BTC at 15–18 UTC and sold 355BTC at ~$84,470 at 21–22 UTC (+$0.04M): bitcoin from 312 to 157BTC; ether on the snapshots — from 8,013 to 2,013 ETH. Ether: who flipped to short. On the snapshots: the address that flipped ether twice yesterday is short again — from a 1,768 ETH long to a 5,695 ETH short; another flipped three times over the day and holds 7,728 ETH of short at 06:16 (yesterday at 04:16 — a 7,235 ETH long); a third went from a 2,000 ETH long to a 2,000 ETH short. Two more addresses added 1,668 and 1,533 ETH to existing shorts. Ether: who added long. The address with the "long ether — short bitcoin" pair grew both legs on the snapshots: ETH LONG from 5,809 to 10,000 ETH, BTC SHORT from 149 to 200BTC. The market's biggest loss.ETH SHORT $279.7M, leverage 5×, entry $2,304, uPnL −$38.9M, liquidation at $4,189 (+57%). The same address in BTC. SHORT $235.9M, entry $75,949, uPnL −$24.1M, liquidation at $141,800 (+68%). A second address with the same pattern.BTC SHORT $153.0M and ETH SHORT $207.6M, both at 5×, uPnL −$17.7M and −$26.2M. Together the two addresses carry $106.9M of unrealised loss across BTC and ETH against $127.1M yesterday — price moved their way over the day. Their $388.9M is 69% of the bitcoin short side across the whole registry at 06:16 against 67% yesterday. Ether longs near the line. The 10× long from $2,694 at $110.3M is $0.75M in the red, liquidation at $2,522 (−6%). The 25× long (the same one that sold bitcoin) — $99.3M from $2,689, uPnL −$0.50M, liquidation at $2,551 (−5%). The market's biggest gain is ETH LONG $81.0M at 20× from $2,134, uPnL +$16.4M.

🔬Who exactly
Both of the biggest shorts are Abraxas Capital Mgmt (Heka Funds): the house's positions barely changed over the day; its unrealised loss across BTC and ETH shrank to $106.9M.
Another large short — address labelled Fasanara Capital: BTC SHORT $38.4M at 30× and ETH SHORT $91.5M at 25×.
Machi Big Brother is the 40× long that sold bitcoin both on the rise and on the drop while adding ether: BTC LONG $24.5M, ETH LONG $99.3M with a liquidation line at $2,551.
The partly force-closed short, the new address with the long near the high and the other addresses in this section carry no public label.
Money by address. Over seven days all $8.9M of incoming bitcoin arrived from Binance addresses; $10.3M of ether and $5.6M of bitcoin went to addresses of Wintermute; $9.0M of USDC went to OKX deposit addresses.
🔒THE WEEK'S DYNAMICS 🔬
Perps on a constant set of addresses. Over 7 days on 128 addresses: BTC — $33M into the short, ETH — $47M into the short.
Gamma flip.BTC across all expiries $76,519 against $78,555 yesterday, spot 10.6% above it (what the flip is). ETH — $2,679 yesterday, $2,662 today: spot only 0.5% above it.
The price of fear. On the weekly window the premium is −0.9 (IV34.8 against the actual weekly HV35.7) against +1.2 yesterday: options are cheaper than the real move — a rare regime.
Changing of the guard. Over the week the whales assembled 212 confirmed structures: 56 bullish, 63 bearish, 31 on volatility, 62 on range.
🔒CROSS-CHECK IN DETAIL 💠

In ETH$135.4M of longs within 5% below the market against $21.9M yesterday: ether has dropped to the line of one of the biggest longs. Shorts above the market — $20.7M against $1.5M. This is about the RANGE of a move for the same push, not about a higher probability of that move (what the fuel map is).
Gamma vacuum. In BTC it is empty above at $92,000–$94,000 and below at $77,000–$78,000; in ETH — $2,500–$2,550 under the market.

📅PUBLIC LEDGER
(computed by code at the settlement price)
The market-maker corridor. Across 418 expiries since February the market-maker break-even corridor held the settlement price 341 times — 82%. On Friday price left the corridor upward by 0.4% in bitcoin; in ether it held. Decision: we lean on the corridor knowing that roughly one expiry in five it doesn't hold — Friday's bitcoin expiry was one of those.
Max pain. An exact match with the settlement in 151 of those same 418 expiries, 36%; on Friday both assets diverged from it by 2.9–3.3%. Decision: we don't chase max pain.
The walls. The call wall held the settlement in 72 of 149 expiries where price reached it — 48%; the put wall in 42 of 102, 41%. Decision: we don't publish a wall without an expiry and a contract count, nor its percentage without a base.
Whale structures. The registry: 871 closed cases (5 of them from Bybit), −$19.11M in total for the whales. Decision: win rate isn't money, and we don't copy whale structures — we track where they stand.
Polygon. Pendulum +$9,665 since 11.05 with −$163 on the day — both numbers from one series, the live curve of the best of four versions. Decision: we publish the tally daily with the same denominator and with the version's name.
