One night rally pushed a whale from our files out of the marketand the ether whales' turn partly unwound before the snapshot.
Case #20261005 · 05.10.2026 06:07 UTC · BTC$85,724 / ETH$2,704 · analysis: Opus 5.5 by Anthropic
📅YESTERDAY
Sunday's expiry settled at 08:00 UTC: BTC$84,977, ETH$2,696. The max pain fixed a day before expiry — $85,000 and $2,700 — matched the settlement for both assets, and the market-maker break-even corridor held price in both. Today's Monday expiry settles after this snapshot.
The case registry took in six new cases — all in bitcoin, all small; the closed tally stands at 871.
⚡THE GIST
• Bitcoin added 1.0% over the day, to $85,724; overnight it touched ~$87,000 on perps. On OKX swaps $584k was liquidated over the day, all of it shorts.
• The refill whale from our investigation didn't hold: on the night rally the exchange force-closed part of his short, and he closed the rest himself. Both protagonists of our investigations are now out of the market.
• Ether: between the morning snapshots the whales cut their short tilt by about $28M, but the biggest flipper went short again before the snapshot — the turn didn't stick. In bitcoin the day's shift is small, and even its direction depends on the measurement window.
• The funds on Friday: $190M went into the BTC ETFs, while the ETH funds posted a fourth straight outflow.
• Verdict — continuation ⟳: the whales broadly hold their positions; the overnight turn in ether partly rolled back.
• 📊 Our Polygon — Pendulum: the best of four versions, +$173 on the day, +$10,086 in total since 11.05.
• 📊 Our Polygon — signals: best — Dust Strategy V2 +$81,719 at a 4% win rate · worst — Wheel Trail V8 −$10,296. Table at the bottom.
🐋WHALES: WHAT CHANGED — three arenas
Arena one — Hyperliquid futures. We measure the day's change on a constant set of addresses (how we track whale positions) — the 147 present in both snapshots at 04:16 UTC — and count in coins. In ETH the longs on this set added 5,351 ETH and the shorts shrank by 4,809 ETH: at the morning snapshot's price the short tilt narrowed by about $28M. Part of that rolled back after 04:16: the biggest address that flipped long overnight went short again at 05:03, and between the 05:46 snapshots the ether shift toward long is only ≈$7M. In bitcoin the direction depends on the window. On the 04:16 set the longs added 89BTC and the shorts 191BTC: the short tilt grew by about $9M. Between the 05:46 snapshots it's the other way round — the bitcoin short tilt shrank by about $18M. Across the registry — among positions with a liquidation price — the totals at the 06:07 UTC snapshot: BTC long $228.2M against a short of $607.6M, ETH$480.4M against $877.8M. The whales' long share in BTC is 27.3% against 25.2% yesterday. Overleveraged whales number 67 against 70 yesterday, $1.24B of positions together, 66% of them longs. Near a margin call, by our fragility index — none.
Arena two — Deribit options. After the weekend the blocks are back: over two days 23 structures were recognised in bitcoin against 4 yesterday, and 9 in ether against 5. The next heavy expiry is Friday 09.10. Among the bitcoin ones — positions on a narrow corridor slightly above the market and on a moderate rise; in ether — selling volatility on a calm market and a bearish position close to the market. Quiet accumulation outside the blocks (what a block is): in ether — puts under the market for mid-October and calls far above the market; in bitcoin, puts below the market are being added.
Arena three — money at the exchange border. The snapshot is fresh — up to this morning. Over seven days $58.0M was brought into the exchange and $104.5M taken out: $46.5M more was withdrawn than deposited, against $39.6M yesterday. USDC cash keeps leaving through the bridge: $78.0M out against $42.8M in. Bitcoin: $9.9M out against $6.1M in. Unlike yesterday, more ether is leaving than arriving: $8.1M against $2.1M.
This is positioning, not a direction forecast.
🧭CROSS-CHECK — five camps of witnesses
What the funds are doing. Spot ETFs are the only camp that measures purchases of the coin itself, not a leveraged position. On Friday $189.8M went into the BTC funds, a second straight day of inflows; most of it — BlackRock's IBIT, +$158.2M. The ETH funds lost $37.4M — a fourth straight outflow. Monday's numbers aren't in yet. Over the five sessions of 28.09–02.10: BTC+$241.1M against +$2.39B the week before; ETH−$138.0M against +$690M. This contradicts the whales in bitcoin: the funds are buying, while the whales hold a short more than twice the size of their long. In ether the funds are selling while the whales shifted toward long over the day — here the camps part ways.
What the options market says. This camp measures one thing: what insurance costs on Deribit. BTCskew+0.4 against −0.5 yesterday: puts and calls are almost balanced (what skew is). In ETH+0.1 against +2.2 — yesterday's premium for ether puts is gone. BTC two-day vol sits in the 39th percentile since February against the 17th yesterday; DVOL36.7 against 35.5 (what implied vol is). Our fear-and-greed index stands at 77 out of 100 against 83 yesterday. This camp is silent: insurance got a little dearer but is still cheaper than usual.
What the futures say. This camp measures who pays whom to hold a position. BTC funding on Hyperliquid is +0.010% in eight-hour terms — the venue's base rate, as yesterday; on Binance +0.007% against +0.003% (what funding is). In ETH+0.010% and +0.010% against +0.010% and +0.004% yesterday. This camp is silent: funding sits at the base.
What the crowd is doing. This camp measures how retail accounts stand against the whales. On Bybit perps 56% of BTC accounts stand long against 57% yesterday, and in ETH67% against 69%. This camp is silent: the crowd shed a few longs into the rise.
Any signs of stress. This camp measures whether anyone has already been forced out of the market. Among the Hyperliquid registry wallets there was at least one partial forced closure over the day — the short of the refill whale from our investigation. On OKX swaps $584k was liquidated, all of it shorts, against $660 yesterday. This contradicts the whales: once again it was shorts that were forced out — the side the whales stand on.
Again: this is positioning, not a direction forecast.
🌡ALTSEASON — the classic and our barometer
The classic altseason index hasn't updated since yesterday: 53.4 out of 100 on a list of 191 alts. This is the transition zone: altseason starts at 75, bitcoin season sits below 25.
Our barometer watches money, not prices: open interest, funding and retail come from Bybit perps, the whales from the Hyperliquid registry. Alts' share of open interest is 43.0% — $5.44B of $12.66B, against 43.4% yesterday.
Alt contracts with funding hotter than bitcoin's make up 81% of open interest against 82% yesterday.
Retail in the top-10 coins stands 70.3% long against 71.4% yesterday.
Whales in alts are structurally short: 30.4% long across $1.66B of positions, the biggest of them HYPE. That gap itself is permanent, the signal is in its CHANGE — over the day the whales' long share rose by less than a point.

⚖️VERDICT OF THE DAY
continuation ⟳ — the whales broadly hold their positions: the overnight turn toward long in ether partly rolled back before the snapshot, and in bitcoin the whales' short is more than twice their long. Witnesses: the funds go against the whales in bitcoin; stress goes against the whales, because it was shorts that got forced out; options, futures and the crowd are silent.
What this does NOT mean. It isn't a claim that the whales are turning: the ETH funds have been selling for four days, and the whales' ether short is still almost twice their long. Nor is the exit of both protagonists of our investigations a whale reversal — these are individual wallets' stories.

• how the refill whale flipped twice in a day, and how his short ended;
• who flipped long in ether and who made it back; who keeps building a bitcoin short.

🔒WHALES IN DETAIL 💠
Portraits from the Hyperliquid registry, snapshot 06:07 UTC; the day's change is measured between the 04:16 snapshots, in coins; individual addresses' moves come from the registry snapshots (every 30 min) and trade records. Nicknames aren't treated as identification.
The refill whale: two days, two flips. On 4 October at 06:16 he holds a 53BTC short with its line at $85,540. By the snapshots, at 08:16 he's already long 27BTC, at 08:46 — 37BTC, and at 10:46 short again, 41BTC, with a line around $86,400. At 22:16–23:27 UTC bitcoin reaches ~$86,800, and the exchange force-closes 15BTC of his short (−$19.5k) together with a short in AAVE. On 5 October at 01:17 he closes the remaining 26.8BTC himself at $86,721 (−$38.8k). No positions left, $35k on the spot account, minus $4.48M over his whole life. The 40x bear — out of the market. Since closing on 3 October he hasn't opened anything new. Who is building a bitcoin short. The 30× short added bitcoin over the day, from 396 to 567BTC: at 06:07 — BTC SHORT $48.3M from $84,769. Who is adding longs. The 40× long that was buying yesterday too — from 360 to 460BTC: BTC LONG $39.9M from $84,907, uPnL +$0.38M; it cut ether from 36,550 to 34,400 ETH. Another 40× address — from 157 to 260BTC. An address absent from yesterday's snapshot appeared with a 314BTC long at 10×, and another, already known to the registry, opened a 192BTC long and a 5,767 ETH long. Ether: who flipped — and back. An address that has flipped several times in recent days was long 7,960 ETH at 04:16 (yesterday — short 7,728 ETH), but at 05:03 it flipped back into a short — 6,184 ETH at the 05:46 snapshot. Another held a 7,266 ETH short at 04:16 instead of a 125BTC long, and by 05:46 had closed everything — no positions. A third address's ether short shrank from 15,200 to 13,338 ETH. The market's biggest loss.ETH SHORT $282.8M, leverage 5×, entry $2,304, uPnL −$41.9M, liquidation at $4,083 (+51%). The same address in BTC. SHORT $239.0M, entry $75,949, uPnL −$27.2M, liquidation at $137,835 (+61%). A second address with the same pattern.BTC SHORT $155.0M and ETH SHORT $211.1M, both at 5×, uPnL −$19.8M and −$28.5M. Together the two addresses carry $117.4M of unrealised loss across BTC and ETH against $111.7M yesterday. Their $394.0M is 65% of the bitcoin short side across the registry against 69% yesterday. Ether longs. The 10× long from $2,694 at $111.5M is up $0.44M, liquidation at $2,524 (−7%). The 25× long — $94.0M from $2,690, liquidation at $2,479 (−8%). The market's biggest gain is ETH LONG $81.9M at 20× from $2,134, uPnL +$17.3M.

💎SCENARIOS IN DETAIL 💠
The code's verdicts. From 03.10: the slide was cancelled at its level — a high of $86,473 on the spot series the code scores with (intrahour, perps reached ~$87,000), against the $86,300 level; the corridor and the squeeze from 03.10 close today at 06:53 UTC, after this snapshot. The scenarios from 04.10 run to Tuesday 06.10; the code will score them at the deadline on its own spot series.
The all-time tally (N counts only those that reached a verdict): squeeze up through the short fuel — 15 of 33, 11 more cancelled at their level; corridor — 17 of 35 plus 8 partial, 5 more cancelled; slide into the long fuel — 9 of 20, 14 more cancelled. The directional types are still no better than a coin toss.
The corridor holds — 50%. ⏱ 2 days, to Wednesday 07.10. BTC stays within the near 2% of the market: $84,000–$87,450. Cancellation level: a touch of $81,450 — the lower edge of the five-percent zone.
Slide into the long fuel — 25%. ⏱ 2 days, to Wednesday 07.10. Trigger: a touch of $84,000 — a break below the near 2%, into the zone where $27.0M of long liquidation lines sit under the market. Cancellation level: a touch of $87,450.
Squeeze up through the short fuel — 25%. ⏱ 2 days, to Wednesday 07.10. Trigger: a touch of $87,450 — a break above the near 2%. Cancellation level: a touch of $84,000.
This is how we weigh the odds — not a promise; the code will compute the verdict from spot history.

📅PUBLIC LEDGER
(computed by code at the settlement price)
The market-maker corridor. Across 422 expiries since February the market-maker break-even corridor held the settlement price 345 times — 82%. Sunday's expiry held in both assets. Decision: we lean on the corridor knowing that roughly one expiry in five it doesn't hold.
Max pain. An exact match with the settlement in 155 of those same 422 expiries, 37%; on both Saturday and Sunday both assets matched. Decision: we don't chase max pain — a run of quiet days doesn't change the share.
The walls. The call wall held the settlement in 74 of 151 expiries where price reached it — 49%; the put wall in 42 of 103, 41%. Decision: we don't publish a wall without an expiry and a contract count, nor its percentage without a base.
Whale structures. The registry: 871 closed cases (5 of them from Bybit), −$19.11M in total for the whales. Decision: win rate isn't money, and we don't copy whale structures — we track where they stand.
Polygon. Pendulum +$10,086 since 11.05 with +$173 on the day — both numbers from one series, the live curve of the best of four versions. Decision: we publish the tally daily with the same denominator and with the version's name.
