RSI below 30: does a bounce follow? We checked BTC and ETH since 2017
Not visible in historyA popular idea in technical analysis: when the daily RSI drops below 30, the market is oversold and a bounce tends to follow. We wrote it down as one exact rule, time-stamped it before counting, and ran it on Binance daily candles for BTC and ETH from September 2017 to November 2026.
In history the bounce is not visible. After such days BTC rose less often than over an ordinary 14 days, and ETH on average kept falling.
The rule we counted
RSI(14) in Wilder's version on daily closes (00:00 UTC). A case is the first close below 30 after the RSI had been above it. A new case counts only if at least 14 days have passed since the last one, so the windows do not overlap.
For each case we took the price change over the next 14 days and compared it with the 14-day change from every day in the same period.
The idea counts as visible in history only if both coins move the way it says, and random shifts of the dates rarely produce the same gap. The rules were time-stamped on 5 November 2026, before anything was counted.
What history showed
| BTC | ETH | |
|---|---|---|
| Cases | 26 | 24 |
| Average change over the next 14 days | +2.8% | −6.2% |
| Average change over any 14 days | +1.2% | +0.9% |
| Price rose after a case | 42% | 33% |
| Price rose over any 14 days | 54% | 51% |
| Random date shifts give the same gap or a bigger one | in 29% of tries | the gap points the other way |
The BTC average is lifted by three big bounces: February 2018 (+60.7%), March 2020 (+40.4%) and March 2023 (+39.0%). Without them, the average change over the 14 days after a case was −1.9%.
On ETH the price on average kept falling after such days and rose in only a third of the cases.
Since 2021 the picture is the same. BTC: 16 cases, +0.2% against +0.5% for any 14 days. ETH: 16 cases, −3.6% against +0.5%.
What this does not mean
This does not say that technical analysis or RSI is useless. We checked one popular wording on the daily candles of two coins. Another threshold, timeframe or horizon, or an extra condition, is a different rule.
Nor does it say the opposite: we did not test whether price falls after RSI drops below 30.
Short answers
Does RSI below 30 mean a bounce for Bitcoin?
On Binance daily candles since 2017, not visibly. After 26 such cases BTC rose over the next 14 days in 42% of them, while any 14 days rose in 54%.
What about Ethereum?
After 24 cases ETH fell 6.2% over the next 14 days on average and rose in a third of them, so the bounce is not there either.
Why 14 days?
We chose the horizon and time-stamped it before counting, so we could not pick whichever looked best afterwards.
Limits of this check
- About two dozen cases per coin, so one big crash or bounce weighs a lot.
- Binance spot only; other exchanges and futures were not checked.
- One horizon, 14 days, chosen before the count.
Your version is a different rule
Your version with another threshold, timeframe or an extra condition is a different rule, and that is what a check is for. Describe it in words and get the free pre-check.
